New Fall 2014 TV Shows: Midseason Report

janethevirginIn September, I decided that I was going to try 18 new shows this fall. In fact, I tried 19 shows. USA’s Benched managed to sneak up on me with its October 28th premiere date. Now that most TV shows are on midseason hiatus, it’s time to assess the relative success of these shows.

I’m completely sold on five shows and I’m still watching an additional five shows with some trepidation. That’s a pretty good success rate for a slate of new shows that seemed less than promising.

Fox Releases First Full-Length Gotham Trailer

Fox has released the first full length trailer for Gotham and it looks fantastic. I’ve already made my anticipation for this series known and that enthusiasm remains unabated. It looks beautiful and there are plenty of directions for them to go in with the rich cast of characters that they’ve assembled. If Arrow is truly the example of how DC translates into television, then this show has the potential to more than live up to its promise. Continue reading

Fox and DC’s Gotham Needs to Get on my Screen Now

Ben McKenzieWhen I first heard that Fox and DC Comics were going to be making Gotham, a Batman prequel TV series about the time when Bruce Wayne was a kid, I was less than enthused. I gave it a great big “Meh.” Then I heard about the cast and the actual premise and I changed my opinion to “PUT THIS ON MY TV NOW!”

While they are planning to cast a child to play Bruce Wayne, the series will be focusing on the origin story of Commissioner Gordon back when he was a rookie detective. Gordon will be played by Ben McKenzie. While many people may remember him from his time on The OC, it’s his most recent role that has me excited for this bit of casting news. For five seasons, he played a cop on the excellently gritty police drama Southland. Ben McKenzie knows how to play a cop.
