Comedy! Finally a genre with multiple shows and categories that I care about. Will Orange is the New Black take down Modern Family? Or any other show? Seriously, the Emmy voters heard that Modern Family was edge during its first season and haven’t gotten over that since. Julia Louis-Dreyfus did win best actress in a comedy last year and the show has gotten far fewer nominations this year than it did in years past so maybe they’ve finally clued in and have started to take notice of other shows.
Outstanding Directing For a Comedy Series
Episodes “Episode 309” (Showtime) – Iain B. MacDonald, Directed by
Glee “100” (Fox) – Paris Barclay, Directed by
Louie “Elevator, Part 6” (FX) – Louis C.K., Directed by
Modern Family “Vegas” (ABC) – Gail Mancuso, Directed by
Orange is the New Black “Lesbian Request Denied” (Netflix) – Jodie Foster, Directed by
Silicon Valley “Minimum Viable Product” (HBO) – Mike Judge, Directed by
At one point or another, I have been a regular watcher of all of these shows. I no longer watch Episodes, Glee, or Modern Family. I’m going to rule them all out in the hopes that the Emmy voters truly have come around to my way of thinking on Modern Family. As much as I like Silicon Valley, one short first season may not be enough to get the attention of voters. I’m going to guess that they’ve come around on Louis C.K., though, and of course Jodie Foster has her own cache. I think it could be either one of them.
Will Win: Jodie Foster for Orange is the New Black
Should Win: Jodie Foster for Orange is the New Black or Louis C.K. for Louie
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
The Big Bang Theory (CBS) – Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper
Derek (Netflix) – Ricky Gervais as Derek
Episodes (Showtime) – Matt LeBlanc as Matt LeBlanc
House of Lies (Showtime) – Don Cheadle as Marty Kaan
Louie (FX) – Louis C.K. as Louie
Shameless (Showtime) – William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher
I don’t entirely understand Matt LeBlanc or Don Cheadle’s nominations and William H. Macy’s nomination just makes me mad. He’s not the lead and if anyone was going to be nominated from that show, it should be Emmy Rossum. She’s fantastic. I think the Emmy voters are still trying to figure out how they feel about Netflix shows and Derek doesn’t quite have the hype or prestige of Orange is the New Black or House of Cards. I think this is the category where the voters stick to old habits.
Will Win: Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory
Should Win: Louis C.K. for Louie
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Girls (HBO) – Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath
Mike & Molly (CBS) – Melissa McCarthy as Molly Flynn
Nurse Jackie (Showtime) – Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton
Orange is the New Black (Netflix) – Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman
Parks and Recreation (NBC) – Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope
Veep (HBO) – Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Vice President Selina Meyer
I think that if the Emmy voters buy into Orange is the New Black, they buy into it hard. Taylor Schilling has a real chance to win this thing. Many people might complain about how they hate her character but that just means that she’s doing her job right. If Piper was the character that we all really loved, then the show wouldn’t be nearly as compelling. It would spend more time with her and less with the other characters. Between that and Uzo Aduba’s guest actress win, I think this is Orange is the New Black‘s year.
Will Win: Taylor Schilling for Orange is the New Black
Should Win: Taylor Schilling for Orange is the New Black or Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox) – Andre Braugher as Captain Ray Holt
Girls (HBO) – Adam Driver as Adam Sackler
Modern Family (ABC) – Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett
Modern Family (ABC) – Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy
Portlandia (IFC) – Fred Armisen as Various Characters
Veep (HBO) – Tony Hale as Gary Walsh
Will Tony Hale win again? Maybe they’ll take the chance to give a win to Adam Driver before he’s cemented as a gigantic movie star and seem cool by giving something to Girls. Portlandia has a similar cool factor. The win I’d love to see, though, is Andre Braugher for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. His deadpan is consistently great. All he has to do is hold some puppies and I’m in love.
Will Win: Tony Hale for Veep
Should Win: Andre Braugher for Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy
The Big Bang Theory (CBS) – Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah Fowler
Modern Family (ABC) – Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy
Mom (CBS) – Allison Janney as Bonnie
Orange is the New Black (Netflix) – Kate Mulgrew as Galina “Red” Reznikov
Saturday Night Live (HBO) – Kate McKinnon as Various Characters
Veep (HBO) – Anna Chlumsky as Amy Brookheimer
I would be fine with everyone but Julie Bowen winning in this category. Allison Janney already won the guest actress in a drama Emmy this year for Masters of Sex and I think she has a strong chance to repeat here. She’s easily the best part of Mom (someone find Anna Faris a better role) and Emmy voters clearly like her. I’d love to see a Kate Mulgrew win, though. I had no idea that Captain Janeway had Red in her.
Will Win: Allison Janney for Mom
Should Win: Kate Mulgrew for Orange is the New Black
Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series
Episodes (Showtime) “Episode 305” – David Crane, Written by; Jeffrey Klarik, Written by
Louie (FX) “So Did the Fat Lady” – Louis C.K., Written
Orange is the New Black (Netflix) – “I Wasn’t Ready (Pilot)” – Liz Friedman, Written by; Jenji Kohan, Written by
Silicon Valley “Optimal Tip-To-Tip Efficiency” – Alec Berg, Written by
Veep “Special Relationship” (HBO) – Simon Blackwell, Story and Teleplay by; Tony Roche, Story and Teleplay by; Armando Iannucci, Story by
I think Louie wins this one due to the monologue that was excellently delivered by Sarah Baker. Louis C.K. owes her a huge thank you if he wins. Looking back on it, I don’t think it’s as good as everyone though that it was after it first aired and what I did love about it came mostly from the actress. If the Orange is the New Black pilot wasn’t successful, it wouldn’t have sucked everyone into epic binge watches and I really do think that they have a good chance at winning a lot of awards this year. I’d love to see Silicon Valley take this one, though. The nominated episode had the classiest dick joke ever told.
Will Win: Liz Friedman and Jenji Kohan for Orange is the New Black
Should Win: Alec Berg for Silicon Valley
Outstanding Comedy Series
The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
Louie (FX)
Modern Family (ABC)
Orange is the New Black (Netflix)
Silicon Valley (HBO)
Veep (HBO)
Anything but Modern Family! I’d prefer it not be The Big Bang Theory but I’d understand it. Louie might have been a little weird for the
